The Red Badge of Courage and Maggie

Henty Fleming enlists in the Union army despite his mother's opposiion, and finds that military life consists mostly of drilling, marching, and waiting for something to happen. The killing he later sees and takes part in changes him from a bewildered youth to an experienced soldier, and Stephen Crane reports this transformation in a plain style that allows the horror of war to speak for itself.
