Marissa's Books & GiftsAfter his mistreatment at the hands of his brother, William Crimsworth is relieved of his employment as a clergyman and offered a position at an all-boys boarding school in Belgium. Soon, word of his proficiency as a professor spread and he is offered a second position in a neighboring all-girls school. He accepts the offer and discovers that there is something special to one of the teachers named Frances?
The deliberately unromantic hero of The Professor is William Crimsworth - the only time the author used a male narrator - in a story based on her own experiences as a language student in Belgium. The theme was reworked with a woman as the leading character in Villette (1853) and it has always been an interesting point of comparison for keen readers of Charlotte Bronte's work.
